Why this book was written

In 2001, Dr. Karpa’s two year old son was diagnosed with a life-threatening gastrointestinal infection caused by Clostridium difficile (C. diff). Standard antibiotics did not help the child and nearly a year later, his health continued to deteriorate, as he was also diagnosed with autoimmune illnesses.

Karpa searched everywhere for a cure for her son. In the medical literature, she found probiotics, but she had difficulty finding pediatric gastroenterologists who were knowledgeable in prescribing these “alternative” therapies.

Finally, Karpa found a pediatric gastroenterologist at Johns Hopkins who had experience with probiotics. It took fewer than 10 days, using an appropriately prescribed probiotic, for her son’s gastrointestinal symptoms to resolve completely. Within three months, his extra-intestinal symptoms and autoimmune problems resolved, too.

During her research, Karpa discovered that probiotics have been used successfully to treat, prevent, and cure a number of diseases including: Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, eczema, food allergies, vaginal infections, autism, chronic inflammatory disorders, etc.—more than 100 medical conditions in all!
